The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing: Tommy Dorsey's Legacy

A Reflection on the Iconic Band Leader and Trombonist
Tommy Dorsey, affectionately dubbed the "Sentimental Gentleman of Swing," earned widespread acclaim for his smooth-toned trombone artistry. Renowned among his peers for his technical prowess, Dorsey's signature theme song, "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You," epitomised his heartfelt style. The younger sibling of fellow bandleader Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy forged his own path after their split in the mid-1930s, assembling a band that achieved remarkable success from the late 1930s through the 1950s. He remains celebrated for his enduring standards, including "Opus One," "This Love of Mine"—which reached number 3 in 1941 and featured Frank Sinatra on vocals—"Song of India," "Marie," "On Treasure Island," and his most iconic hit, "I'll Never Smile Again," which topped the charts for twelve weeks in 1940. Dorsey's contributions have left an indelible mark on the swing era, cementing his place as one of its most influential figures.

Composer of Enduring Classics and Influential Music Industry Figure
Thomas Joseph McCarthy (27 September 1885 – 18 December 1943) was a distinguished American lyricist, renowned for penning some of the early 20th century’s most memorable songs. Among his greatest achievements are the timeless classics "You Made Me Love You" and "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows". The latter, adapted from Chopin's evocative Fantaisie-Impromptu, first appeared in the musical Oh, Look! (1918), starring the Dolly Sisters.
Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, McCarthy collaborated frequently with acclaimed composers Harry Tierney and Fred Fisher, contributing significantly to the era’s musical landscape. His influence extended beyond songwriting, as he served as director of ASCAP from 1921 to 1929, helping to shape the rights and recognition of songwriters across America.

Farmhand’s Timeless Debut: “Long Hollow Blues” Delivers Emotion and Authenticity

A veteran sound emerges in a fresh, dynamic album
“Long Hollow Blues” (2025) marks Farmhand's debut, but from the very first track, the band’s music exudes a sense of familiarity and seasoned artistry. Despite being their first release, the album feels as though the group has been crafting their sound for generations, with each song inviting listeners into a world rich with experience and soul.
The core trio—Geoff Newhall on bass, Jimi Fogelsong handling vocals and drums, and Richard Fleming providing vocals and rhythm guitar—are joined by talented lead guitarists Dan Pierce, Jamie Potterbaum, and Michael Saint-Leon, whose contributions span four tracks apiece. The album also features a standout guest appearance from Tom Hambridge, who delivers lead vocals on the record’s only cover, “Fresh Out” (originally by Kingfish Ingram).
Drawing on decades of musical expertise, Farmhand delivers twelve tracks that traverse a wide emotional landscape. Whether it’s laughter, tears, or a rush of rock ’n’ roll energy, the album offers a bit of everything, anchored by poignant lyrics and infectious melodies. “We tried to come up with songs that hit you where you live,” says Newhall, highlighting the band’s commitment to crafting music that resonates on a deeply personal level. “Long Hollow Blues” is an impressive first outing, promising even greater things to come from this remarkable ensemble.
