Fred Astaire Jazz Interpretations of the Great American Songbook a Landmark Jazz Album

Fred Astaire’s jazz interpretations of the Great American Songbook, featuring Oscar Peterson and the Jazz at the Philharmonic group, blend engaging song introductions and tap dancing with top-tier musicianship. Produced by Norman Granz in 1953, with a line-up including Peterson, Barney Kessel, Flip Phillips, Charlie Shavers, Ray Brown, and Alvin Stoller, this album earned Astaire a place in the AVID Jazz Hall of Fame. While his earlier recordings are iconic, this collaboration showcases Astaire’s remarkable adaptability to jazz. Louis Interviews

Eric Miyashiro

Trumpet legend Eric Miyashiro talks with Louis Dowdeswell about moving beyond flashy high notes to becoming a musician who uplifts others.

Key Topics

  • Maynard Pouch: Why vintage mouthpieces don’t make the player.
  • Buddy Rich Lessons: Playing for the audience and the spectacle of the lead chair.
  • Band Leader Curse: Joining legendary bands just before the leaders’ passing.
  • Voice in Tokyo: Leaving the US to build a legacy in Japan.
  • High Notes vs. Heart: The gift and curse of range; the power of heartfelt melodies.

Eric’s wisdom offers humility and artistry for musicians and creatives alike.

Quote: "I had that power, but I was just using it to satisfy my ego... that old man opened up a whole new gateway to becoming a responsible musician. You're taking away two hours of their precious lifetime to hear you play. I should give the best of my life to them."
